Jekyll.comm
The magic of the media
by Pietro Greco
Master's Degree in Science Communication, ISAS, Trieste, Italy
A word of warning for scientists: don’t appear on talk-shows. Not only would you probably run into a magician, you might even be mistaken for one, which is much worse.
And do not ask the press, the radio and television to put their magical mentality aside: the media are condemned to it. It is not just a matter of what the audience wants. It is the cause-effect relations the media constantly have to establish that have per se something “magic”.
Jekyll.comm is an on-line journal on scientific communication. Since the world of communications and the scientific community are now undergoing a rapid, crucial and uncertain transition, Jekyll.comm is trying to become an interdisciplinary melting-pot capable of providing some theoretical guidelines for science communication. What does "science communication" actually mean today? What does science currently need, and what are the means and techniques it can avail itself of to communicate with the general public and within the scientific community itself? What sociological and epistemological problems are to be faced when models for theoretical analysis or practical means to popularise science are aimed at? How are the informative, pedagogical, interpretative and political dimensions of science communication changing? How is the relation between science and social institutions changing? What is the role of communication in this time of change?

(ORF)
